After the death of Breonna Taylor, the Louisville Metro Police Department is looking for a new chief. Former deputy chief Yvette Gentry is taking leave of absence from her current roles to become interim chief. She will serve in the position for four to six months.

Gentry is working in the nonprofit sector and was the executive director of the Rajon Rondo Foundation. She was also involved with the targeted crime reduction task force, a police initiative that targets the African American community.

She has over 20 years of experience in the LMPD, including as a deputy chief. In September 2015, she was named chief of the city’s community building department, and in March, she was reappointed as director of the metro area’s youth detention services.

When she was not in her position, she was working in the police department, where she helped establish a police body camera program and introduced Breonna’s Law, which requires officers to wear a body camera when responding to calls.
