When she was a teenager, Ketanji Onyika Brown began thinking about a career in law. She worked as a law clerk in the District of Columbia, and later attended Harvard University. She graduated from the law school, and became editor of the Harvard Law Review. She was also an economist at Time magazine.
Her parents grew up in the Jim Crow South and attended segregated primary schools. Her father was an educator, and her mother was a principal. After Jackson’s birth, the family moved back to Miami. There, a second uncle served as a police officer, and a third was a sex-crime detective.
Before he was a judge, Ketanji Jackson worked for private law firms. He has also served as the editor of Harvard’s law review.
Early days as a lawyer
Before Ketanji Brown Jackson was sworn in as a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in June of 2012, she was a lawyer and editor of the Harvard Law Review. Her confirmation was a major landmark for the nation. It was the first time a Black woman has been appointed to the top court.
Jackson graduated from Harvard University and earned her law degree in 1996. She has worked in private practice and has clerked for three federal jurists. She has been involved in cases involving the Guantanamo Bay detainees. She has also been an assistant special counsel for the U.S. Sentencing Commission from 2003 to 2005.
Ketanji Brown Jackson’s early career included clerkships for Judge Bruce M. Selya and Justice Stephen Breyer. She then went to work for a law firm. During her time at the firm, she wrote on prescription drug prices, economic policy, and other legal issues.
