While he was in the army, he dreamed of being a naval fighter pilot. However, he was wounded at the battle of Anzio. In the end, he received a Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Combat Infantryman Badge, and European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal.
Before he was famous, Arness worked as an extra in films. He later had a role in the movie The Thing From Another World, where he played the titular character. As a result of this role, he dyed his hair naturally blond.
After becoming popular, he met Janet Surtees. They became friends and started working together. Eventually, they became married.
