Personal life

James Arness was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on May 26, 1923. His parents were traveling medical supplies salesman. He graduated from West High School in 1942. During the war, he served in the US Army. Upon his discharge, he took up a job as a radio announcer. This job was recommended to him by a teacher.

While he was in the army, he dreamed of being a naval fighter pilot. However, he was wounded at the battle of Anzio. In the end, he received a Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Combat Infantryman Badge, and European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal.

Before he was famous, Arness worked as an extra in films. He later had a role in the movie The Thing From Another World, where he played the titular character. As a result of this role, he dyed his hair naturally blond.

After becoming popular, he met Janet Surtees. They became friends and started working together. Eventually, they became married.
